Red Stag Collun-Co

Neuquén, Argentina
Red Stag & Wild Boar

This 62,000 acre ranch is a Patagonian icon, located in the Junin de los Andes area that stretches from the high desert foothills of the Andes on the east to the jagged mountains on the west bordering Lanin National Park, near the border with Chile. This is the very property where Red Deer from eastern Europe, were first introduced to Patagonia more than a 100 years ago. The stags in this region are a 100% wild, free roaming, game that wanders through their natural migrations as they did in the beginning of the century. Estancia Collun-Co was established in 1909 by Mr. Robert Hohmann, a German immigrant, when he acquired the land. The property has remained in the family since then. The main ranch house was built in 1912 and then fully refurbished and modernized some years ago. Meanwhile the hunting lodge is also situated at the ranch main headquarters. A beautiful and cozy wooden English-style house that is in the middle of the estancia, with amazing views of the mountains. Like all our other properties, we follow a strict herd management here, harvesting only mature old Stags that are at the peak past peak in their reproductive life. We stalk these big mountain deer that live in the remote and high cordillera and come down into the ranch looking for hinds during the rut.

LODGE LOCATION

Estancia Collun-Co is located in the Junín de los Andes area, in the province of Neuquén, just 20 miles from Chapelco Airport (CPC). It’s east boundary is the world famous Chimehuin river and on the west it borders the Lanin National Park for more than 30 miles.

  • Fly to Bariloche Airport (BRC), which is located about 3 hours away from the lodge, and has daily flights from Buenos Aires and other regional hubs.

FOOD AND DRINK

Our kitchen uses only fresh and regional products, some of them grown at the ranch. By combining these elements, we create a delicious local cuisine. Our experienced cooks, trained in both local and classic culinary techniques, execute our food.

Days start with a hearty breakfast that includes a variety of homemade breads, jam, meadow honey, fresh fruit, natural yogurts, and cereals. We also offer eggs prepared in different ways.

We use only the highest quality local meats. Also game is prepared and presented during midday and night meals.

Wines

Our lunch and dinner menus are paired with some of Argentina’s best wines, most of them grown in the area.

Alcoholic Beverages

The Lodge carries a basic selection of alcoholic beverages. If there is any special brand or type of liquor that you like we recommend to bring it yourself.

At Estancia Collun-Co, as with all our other big game hunting destinations, we aim to provide exceptional experiences in the most beautiful and pristine areas of South America. Due to stringent herd management practices, we limit the harvest to a very exclusive number of trophy Stags each season, adding to the unique appeal of this ranch.

All guiding is conducted on a 1×1 basis, unless guests request otherwise. The hunting team, consisting of the hunter and guide, utilizes the well-established ranch road system with 4WD trucks to reach the designated hunting area for the day. Horses may also be employed if necessary, especially for accessing the more remote and elevated parts of the ranch. Travel times can range from 15 minutes to 1 hour. The classic spot-and-stalk method is the predominant hunting style here. Depending on the season, bowhunters may also spend time patiently waiting near wallows and watering areas.

After a morning stalk, guests return to the lodge for lunch and have the option of a midday nap if desired. Each day, the hunting team returns to the hills in the mid-afternoon for the evening hunt, continuing until dark with enough light to safely descend from the mountain. On occasions when staying out all day, packed lunches are provided. In addition to Stag hunting, the area also boasts a thriving population of pure wild European boar, offering an exciting addition to the Red Deer Hunt.

Red Stag

The property is very near the area where Red Deer from eastern Europe were first introduced in Patagonia, well more than one hundred years ago. The stags that populate this region are 100% wild, free-roaming game that migrate through the terrain, even across the mountains into Chile and back.

Wild Boar

Wild Boar (Sus Scrofa) was the first non-native game animal introduced in Argentina by the early Spanish conquistadores. Later in the 19 century, more pure European boars were introduced in Patagonia and central Argentina. Rapidly they expanded through major areas of the country.

Hunting Gear

RIFLE SLING IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOUR RIFLE HAS A COMFORTABLE SLING.

BINOCULARS A good pair of 8 or 10 X binoculars is a must.

RANGE FINDER Our guides all have range finders and they will measure distances for you. But bringing your personal one is always useful.

SHOOTING STICKS Bring your personal favourite (bipods, tripods), which ever you like best and feel more confident shooting from. The guides will have in case you don’t bring one.

WARM HAT – Something with ear flaps or a ski-style hat that will cover ears is the best bet for colder days.

SMALL FIELD BAG or DAY PACK– To carry camera gear and other personal items into the field.

INSECT REPELLENT – Mosquitoes or other bothersome insects are very unusual in the field. You can bring your personal preference of insect repellent just in case.

MEDICATION – Most people have no stomach problems in this part of Argentina. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea, as when traveling anywhere, to take along medication for symptomatic relief. Also, take aspirin, in addition to other medications you normally use.

NOTE: LAUNDRY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE AT THE LODGE IF DESIRED.

GUNS

In selecting which gun to use, it boils down to personal preference.

Neuquen  province has a general weapon season so clients can choose which kind of gun/bow they want to use. The most common gun for such a hunt is a typical bolt action rifle with a good scope. Good chamberings are 270 Win, 30-06, 7 mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 300 RUM, etc. For Bow hunting, the same type of equipment you will use for Elk, will work for Red Stag. 60 to 70 Lbs compound bows with 400+ gr arrows and good sharp broadheads.

For Wild Boar, the same guns that we use for Stag are fine.

Muzzleloaders, handguns and open-sight guns are welcome too.

GUNS AVAILABLE FOR RENT

Many of our guests agree that renting guns from the lodge can be much easier than applying for gun entry permits and traveling with them internationally.

It’s easy to rent a gun from the lodge. We have a good selection of accurate rifles that are appropriate for these type of hunts. All our rifles sport high-quality scopes. The lodge manager or your guide will note the specific rental rifle you want to use. That gun will be yours for the duration of your stay. However, you are welcome to change guns and try something different. There are no add-on fees to switch. We want you to shoot a gun you’re comfortable and effective with!
