This 62,000 acre ranch is a Patagonian icon, located in the Junin de los Andes area that stretches from the high desert foothills of the Andes on the east to the jagged mountains on the west bordering Lanin National Park, near the border with Chile.

This is the very property where Red Deer from eastern Europe, were first introduced to Patagonia more than a 100 years ago. The stags in this region are a 100% wild, free roaming, game that wanders through their natural migrations as they did in the beginning of the century.

Estancia Collun-Co was established in 1909 by Mr. Robert Hohmann, a German immigrant, when he acquired the land.
The property has remained in the family since then.

The main ranch house, originally built in 1912, was fully refurbished and modernized some years ago, when it was transformed into a high-end hunting lodge. A beautiful and cozy wooden English-style house that is in the middle of the estancia, with amazing views of the mountains.

Like all our other properties, we follow a strict herd management here, harvesting only mature old Stags that are at the peak past peak in their reproductive life. We stalk these big mountain deer that live in the remote and high cordillera and come down into the ranch looking for hinds during the rut.

Why Choose Red Stag Collun-Co

The hunting lodge is also situated at the ranch main headquarters. A beautiful and cozy wooden English-style house that is in the middle of the estancia, with amazing views of the mountains.

San Carlos de Bariloche airport is located 4 hours away and also receives many daily flights from Buenos Aires and other hubs.

The lodge has capacity for 5 hunters, plus as many as 4 non hunters. There are several non-hunting activities within the ranch such as horseback riding, hiking, birdwatching and trout fishing. Miles and miles of the famous Chimehuin and Quilquihue rivers are within the property boundaries. Fly-fishing outings are easily arranged for hunting or non-hunting guests.

What time of the year should I come?

We’re often asked: “When is the best time to hunt red stag at Collun-Co?” While the official hunting season in Neuquén runs from March through May, our approach at the at the ranch is deliberately selective.

We focus only on the 4 best weeks during the rut, offering a limited number of hunts each season to preserve the quality of the experience and the health of the herd.

Chapelco (San Martin de los Andes) airport is located only 30 minutes from the ranch and it is served with by daily flights from Buenos Aires regional and international airports. San Carlos de Bariloche airport is located 3 and a half hours away and also receives many daily flights from Buenos Aires and other hubs.

The Hunting

What to expect on the field

At Estancia Collun-Co, as with all our other big game hunting destinations, we aim to provide exceptional
experiences in the most beautiful and pristine areas of South America. Due to stringent herd management practices, we limit the harvest to a very exclusive number of trophy Stags each season, adding to the unique appeal of this ranch.

All guiding is conducted on a 1×1 basis, unless guests request otherwise. The hunting team, consisting of the hunter and guide, utilizes the well-established ranch road system with 4WD trucks to reach the designated hunting area for the day. Horses may also be employed if necessary, especially for accessing the more remote and elevated parts of the ranch. Travel times can range from 15 minutes to 1 hour. The classic spot-and-stalk method is the predominant hunting style here. Depending on the season, bowhunters may also spend time patiently waiting near wallows and watering areas.

After a morning stalk, guests return to the lodge for lunch and have the option of a midday nap if desired. Each day, the hunting team returns to the hills in the mid-afternoon for the evening hunt, continuing until dark with enough light to safely descend from the mountain. On occasions when staying out all day, packed lunches are provided. In addition to Stag hunting, the area also boasts a thriving population of pure wild European boar, offering an exciting addition to the Red Deer Hunt.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TROPHIES AFTER THE HUNT?

Red Stag Patagonia (RSP) efficiently handles trophy preparation at our ranches per client preferences, such as European, shoulder, or full-body mounts. We process hides and skulls by salting, drying, cleaning, bleaching, and cutting on-site. At the end of the season, the trophies are sent to our taxidermist shop for inspection and final preparations to meet export standards. Simultaneously, our customs broker handles export paperwork and permit applications.

Once the trophies are ready and export documents are issued, our agent manages shipping to the final destination. Importantly, we can only ship to a customs broker at the destination country for clearance. Clients can provide their broker’s information, or we can recommend brokers we’ve worked with. Once the trophies clear the destination country, they can be shipped to you or your chosen taxidermist.

Opting for taxidermy work in Argentina offers numerous advantages. Notably, while waiting for paperwork, the taxidermist can work on your trophy and have it ready for shipment once export permits are granted.

It’s worth mentioning that mounting complete trophies in Argentina might entail slightly higher shipping costs than just antlers and salted hides. However, the taxidermy work is typically more cost-effective and faster. Thus, it can be convenient to have the work done here, unless you specifically prefer your local taxidermist.

Shipping times vary, mainly due to the involvement of multiple government agencies in the export permit process, each with its own unpredictable timeframes. Although some agencies process permits faster, others tend to take their time. Typically, we can ship trophies within 12 months after the hunt. RSP diligently oversees the entire process and works with the best hunting trophy exporter in the country.

For those interested in mounting trophies in the United States, we collaborate with Jonas Bros. of New York, recognized as one of the world’s premier taxidermy studios. We offer discounted rates to our clients.

Hunting Equipment

Hunting Gear

RIFLE SLING – It’s important that your rifle has a comfortable sling.

BINOCULARS – A good pair of 8 or 10 X or binoculars is a must.

RANGE FINDER – Our guides all have range finders and they will measure distances for you. But bringing your personal one is always useful.

BOOTS – This might be the most important item for ensuring a smooth hunt. Bring a good pair of well-broken-in hunting or hiking boots that provide good ankle support.

SHOOTING STICKS – Bring your personal favourite (bipods, tripods), whichever you like best and feel more confident shooting from. The guides will have in case you don’t bring one.

WARM HAT – Something with ear flaps or a ski-style hat that will cover ears is the best bet for colder days.

SMALL FIELD BAG or DAY PACK– To carry camera gear and other personal items into the field.

INSECT REPELLENT – Mosquitoes or other bothersome insects are very unusual in the field. You can bring your personal preference of insect repellent just in case.

MEDICATION
Most people have no stomach problems in this part of Argentina. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea, as when traveling anywhere, to take along medication for symptomatic relief. Also, take aspirin, in addition to other medications you normally use. Band-aids – for sore fingers from shooting.

NOTE: LAUNDRY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE AT THE LODGE IF DESIRED.

GUNS
In selecting which gun to use, it boils down to personal preference.

Mendoza & Neuquen provinces have a general weapon season so clients can choose which kind of gun/bow they want to use. The most common gun for such a hunt is a typical bolt action rifle with a good scope. Good chamberings are 270 Win, 30-06, 7 mm Rem Mag, 7 PRC, 300 Win Mag, etc. For Bow hunting, the same type of equipment you will use for Elk, will work for Red Stag. 60 to 70 Lbs compound bows with 400+ gr arrows and good, sharp broadheads.

For Wild Boar, the same guns that we use for Stag are fine.

Muzzleloaders, handguns and open sight guns are welcome too.

GUNS AVAILABLE FOR RENT
Many of our guests agree that renting guns from the lodge can be much easier than applying for gun entry permits and traveling with them internationally.

It’s easy to rent a gun from the lodge. We have a good selection of accurate rifles that are appropriate for these type of hunts. All our rifles sport high quality scopes. The lodge manager or your guide will note the specific rental rifle you want to use. That gun will be yours for the duration of your stay. However, you are welcome to change guns and try something different. There are no add-on fees to switch. We want you to shoot a gun you’re comfortable and effective with!

Culinary Experience

At Red Stag Patagonia, our goal is to deliver a true taste of Argentina & Chile.

Food & Drink
At Red Stag Collun-Co, every meal captures the essence of Patagonia—simple, generous, and full of flavor. Our kitchen prepares hearty dishes with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, from seasonal fruits and vegetables to Argentina’s renowned beef. Expect traditional asados over open flames, slow-cooked stews, and rustic sides that bring warmth and satisfaction after a day in the field.

Mornings begin with a plentiful breakfast, enjoyed with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Lunches and dinners are a time to gather, share stories, and savor the bounty of the region—whether around the lodge table or by the outdoor fire pit under the Patagonian sky.

Here, we keep it simple—because the flavors speak for themselves.

Wines & Beverages
Meals are paired with a curated selection of Argentine wines, chosen from some of the country’s finest vineyards to complement each dish. Whether enjoying a glass at lunch with lake views or raising a toast by the fire, good wine is always part of the Collun-Co experience.
