Our Buenos Aires Big Game program is based out of
Los Crestones Lodge, a luxurious and sophisticated estancia located on the banks of the Salado River. The mature woodlands and fertile countryside surrounding the lodge offer guests a combination of exceptional wingshooting and some of the best big game hunting in South America.

Some of the world’s largest herds of wild Blackbuck Antelope roam not far from the lodge, while right around the property you’ll find some of the finest free-range Axis Deer hunting in Argentina. Our professional guides know these private lands inside and out. They can organize your hunt, provide an accurate rental rifle, and also guide bowhunters—though we recommend allowing more time if you’d like to pursue either species with a bow.

What time of the year should I come?

We’re often asked: “When is the best time to hunt big game in Buenos Aires?” The answer depends on the species—but one of the great advantages of this program is its long and flexible season, running from April through December 15th.

Axis Deer and Blackbuck Antelope are both non-native, free-range species that thrive in the fertile lowlands surrounding Los Crestones Lodge. Their mating and rutting patterns occur year-round, making it possible to target mature trophies in any month of the season. Our team continuously scouts across several private ranches to place you in the right area at the right time, based on current movement and activity.

Water Buffalo and Wild Boar also offer exciting options during the season, with boar hunts on horseback and buffalo typically pursued a short drive from the lodge.

Whether you’re stalking through wide open pastures or setting up near water sources, each hunt is customized to your goals, schedule, and weapon of choice—rifle or bow. And because Los Crestones is just a two-hour drive from Buenos Aires International Airport, it’s ideal for both long stays and quick getaways.

To get to the lodge there are daily direct flights from many U.S. cities to Buenos Aires (Ezeiza Intl. Airport – EZE). Reaching Los Crestones is easy, the lodge is a convenient two-hour drive from Buenos Aires, via route N2 (104 miles), followed by about 5 miles on good roads through the stunning Argentina countryside.

Helicopter charters from the airport to the lodge can also be arranged, as well as private plane charters to our closest landing strip (25-minute drive). Once at the lodge, you are conveniently close to hunting grounds, with drives averaging 10 to 45 minutes depending on water conditions.

Los Crestones Lodge is located in Castelli, province of Buenos Aires—on the banks of the Salado River. The traditional estancia is surrounded by 60 hectares of preserved natural woodlands, featuring four distinct landscapes:

The Countryside
This productive agricultural area is home to livestock grounds and vast fields home to wheat, corn, sunflower, sorghum, and soybean operations throughout the season.

The Park
Designed more than a century ago, and updated in 2000, this area brims with native and exotic species of

both flora and fauna for you to explore. The arboretum is punctuated by fruit trees, a lagoon, and a botanical interpretive center.

The River
The mighty Saldado River zigzags through the pampa and is home to an array of birds, including herons,

cigueñas, flamingos, and spoonbills. Here, you’ll also encounter otters, capybara, and trout.

The Woodland
This area includes native trees emblematic of the region, such as talas, Sombras de toro, ombúes, and saúcos y coronillos; birds including the Zorzales, Calandrias, and Picazurros; plus deer and the endangered butterfly, which we’ve adopted as our estancia symbol.

The Hunting

What to expect on the field

The Buenos Aires Big Game program is focused on offering the best fair-chase, big game hunting in South America. All species we pursue are completely free-range and wild. Spotting and stalking is the most common method of hunting for rifle hunters. Archery hunters may also spend some time sitting over travel corridors and watering areas, awaiting their quarry to come in.

Drive times vary depending on the selected hunting area, but typically range from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. Most hunts last all day, with an authentic Asado lunch served in the field. A pair of hunters will be accompanied by one guide, all guides speak English (2×1 guiding). When on horseback, the hunting party will be accompanied by a gaucho (wrangler), who will take care of horses and harvest game.

Blackbuck Antylope
The Blackbuck (Antilope Cervicapra) is a diurnal antelope. They graze on open fields of low

grasses, occasionally browsing as well. Does become sexually mature at eight months, but mate no earlier than a year and a half. Bucks mature later, at one and a half years. Mating takes place throughout the year. Gestation is typically 6 months long, after which a single fawn is born. The lifespan is typically 10 – 15 years. They are very prolific and in good years average 1.5 newborn p/year.

They have great eyesight and they rely on it much more than their noses that are not as sharp as deer, for example. They are wide open ground animals, avoiding thick wooded areas as much as possible. From the lodge we access some of the finest areas for free range Black Buck and we arrange hunts that can even be done in half a day after an early morning duck hunt. Our leases have antelope by the thousands!

AXIS DEER
The Axis deer is a species of deer that is native to the Indian subcontinent. The axis is a moder-ately sized deer. Males reach nearly 35 inches and females 28 inches at the shoulder; the head and body length is around 5.6 feet. While bucks weigh from 70 to 180 lb, the lighter females average 70 pounds.

Aaron Anchorena, a wealthy Argentine, brought Axis deer from India as well as Black Buck in the late 19th century. He released them on some of his properties in Argentina and Uruguay. Just like blackbuck, they thrived and colonized massive areas of territory. Central eastern Buenos Aires province was one of the original ranges where they were released around 1890. Today the area has some of the best wild free range populations in South America. Our lodge is located very close to the heart of this big area. This gives our guests the opportunity to hunt true wild axis deer.

WILD BOAR
Wild Boar (Sus Scrofa) was the first non-native game animal introduced in Argentina by the early Spanish conquistadores. Later in the 19 century more pure european boars were introduced in Patagonia and central Argentina. Rapidly they expanded through major areas of the country.

The swamps and vast grasslands of the San Borombon Bay are the main habitat for a huge population of wild boar. Buenos Aires Big Game is located only 45 min away from the bay and we have access to thousands of acres of land on the bay and also inland where every year we find more and more pigs.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TROPHIES AFTER THE HUNT?

Red Stag Patagonia (RSP) efficiently handles trophy preparation at our ranches according to client preferences, such as European, shoulder, or full-body mounts. We process hides and skulls by salting, drying, cleaning, bleaching, and cutting on-site. At the end of the season, trophies are sent to our Buenos Aires taxidermist for inspection and final preparations to meet export standards, while our customs broker handles paperwork and permit applications.

Once trophies are ready and export documents issued, our agent manages shipping to the final destination. Importantly, shipments can only be made to a customs broker in the destination country for clearance. Clients may provide their broker’s information, or we can recommend trusted partners. After clearance, trophies can be delivered directly to you or to your preferred taxidermist.

Choosing to do taxidermy work in Argentina offers several advantages. While paperwork is processed, the taxidermist can begin work on your trophy, often allowing it to be ready for shipment as soon as permits are granted.

It’s worth noting that mounting complete trophies in Argentina may incur slightly higher shipping costs than sending only antlers and salted hides. However, the taxidermy work is usually more cost-effective and faster. For many hunters, it’s convenient to have the work done here, unless you specifically prefer your local taxidermist.

Shipping times vary, as several government agencies are involved in the export permit process, each with its own pace. While some permits are processed quickly, others take longer. Typically, we ship trophies within 12 months after the hunt, and RSP diligently oversees the entire process.

For those who prefer to mount trophies in the United States, we work with Jonas Bros. of New York, one of the world’s premier taxidermy studios, offering discounted rates to our clients.

Hunting Equipment

Red Stag Patagonia provides hunters with high-quality loaner hunting equipment

Hunting Gear

RIFLE SLING – Ensure your rifle has a comfortable sling.

BINOCULARS – A good pair of 8x or 10x binoculars is essential.

RANGE FINDER – Guides carry range finders, but bringing your own is always useful.

BOOTS – One of the most important items for ensuring a smooth hunt is a good pair of well-broken-in, comfortable low hunting or safari boots. Additionally, bring a pair of knee-high rubber boots for rainy days or post-rain hunts.

SHOOTING STICKS –
Bring your personal preference (bipod, tripod, etc.), whichever you shoot best with. Guides will also have some available.

WARM HAT – Something with ear flaps or ski-style coverage for colder days.

SMALL FIELD BAG or DAY PACK– To carry camera gear and personal items in the field.

INSECT REPELLENT – Mosquitoes can appear during warm afternoons. Bring your preferred repellent and consider a Thermacell device.

MEDICATION – While stomach issues are rare here, it’s wise to bring personal medications, aspirin, and basics like band-aids for sore fingers from shooting.

NOTE: LAUNDRY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE AT THE LODGE IF DESIRED.

GUNS
In Buenos Aires province, hunters may choose their preferred weapon.

The most common is a bolt-action rifle with a quality scope. Recommended calibers include .243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Win, and .308 Win.

For bowhunting, the same gear used for whitetail deer works well for Blackbuck and Axis Deer: compound bows of 50–70 lbs with 300+ grain arrows and sharp broadheads.

For horseback wild boar hunts, we typically use 30-30 and .44 Mag lever-action rifles, along with .357 Mag, .44 Mag, and .45 LC revolvers.

GUNS AVAILABLE FOR RENT
Many guests find renting guns at the lodge simpler than navigating international travel with firearms.

We maintain a reliable selection of accurate rifles suited for the hunts at Los Crestones. The lodge manager or your guide will assign a specific rental gun, which will remain yours throughout your stay.

However, you’re welcome to switch if you’d like to try another model—at no extra cost. Our priority is that you feel comfortable and effective with your firearm.

Culinary Experience

At Red Stag Patagonia, our goal is to deliver a true taste of Argentina & Chile.

Food & Drink
At Buenos Aires Big Game, meals are an essential part of the experience. Each day features fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with Argentina’s world-renowned beef and traditional flavors at the heart of every table.

From hearty field lunches during long hunting days to classic asados over open flames and comforting dinners back at the lodge, the focus is always on honest flavors and warm hospitality. Meals are generous and satisfying, bringing guests together to share stories from the day—often around the fire or with views of the Salado River.

Wines & Beverages
Lunch and dinners are paired with outstanding Argentine wines, many from Mendoza’s celebrated vineyards, chosen to complement each meal. An open bar is available at the lodge, and if you’d like a particular spirit or label, we recommend bringing it along to enjoy during your stay.
