The Kautapen Group
Over the past 20 years, Northeastern Argentina—particularly the province of Corrientes—has emerged as one of the finest free-range Axis deer hunting destinations in the world. A combination of remoteness and ideal habitat has turned this region into a true haven for these magnificent spotted deer.
Pirá Lodge, operated by our sister company Nervous Waters, is located in the heart of this vast, game-rich area. For many years, hunting was prohibited here since it lies within the Iberá State Park. Recently, however, the park has authorized regulated hunting of non-native species such as Axis deer, Water Buffalo and wild boar, opening unique opportunities for sportsmen in this remarkable environment.
With more than 30 years of local experience, we have developed a deep understanding of the land and its wildlife. Today, we manage over 150,000 acres of private hunting grounds. While trophy Axis deer remain the highlight, hunters will also find excellent opportunities for water buffalo and wild boar. In addition, just a short distance from our ranch, a growing herd of Blackbuck adds yet another exciting option to the hunting experience.
Here, world-class hunting is combined with authentic hospitality, expert guiding, and the unmatched beauty of the Iberá wetlands. Whether you are pursuing your first Axis buck or adding new species to your list, this is a truly exclusive adventure you won’t find anywhere else.

Designed by award-winning architects, the lodge blends traditional local elegance with all the comforts and luxuries of a contemporary hotel. After an exhilarating day in the field, relax with a cocktail by the fire, share stories with fellow hunters, or unwind under the open sky.
Guests flying into Buenos Aires have the option of overnighting in the city. Whether or not you choose to stay and tour the sights, Pirá lodge can be accessed from Buenos Aires by:
- Commercial flights to Corrientes (CNQ) or Resistencia (RES). These neighboring airports both offer several nonstop daily flights to and from Buenos Aires. Flight time is approximately 1 hour. Upon landing at CNQ or RES, you’ll be met by a Red Stag Patagonia representative, who will then transfer you to the Lodge.
– Drive time from CNQ to Pira: 4 hours.
– Drive time from RES to Pira: 4.5 hours.
- Private Charters. Pirá Lodge has a 5,000-foot grass landing strip. Many of our guests choose this convenient option to get to the Lodge. Depending on the size of your group and the type of plane, it’s about a 2-hour flight from BA to Pira. If the grass landing strip is unavailable (due to inclement weather), there’s an asphalt landing strip in Mercedes, located an 1.15hr drive from Pirá.
- First Class Sleeper Bus. This can be an excellent option for those looking to save money. The overnight 1st class sleeper bus leaves Buenos Aires bus station at 9 p.m. and arrives in Mercedes (the closest city to the lodge) at approximately 6:30 a.m. the following morning. Bus seats are similar to 1st class airplane seats, reclining to a fully horizontal position. Once you arrive in Mercedes, a lodge representative will meet you and transfer you 1.15 hrs to the Lodge. For clients opting for the sleeper bus, we advise booking a Buenos Aires hotel room for a day prior to taking the bus. That way you’ll have a place to stay and relax before boarding at 9 p.m. Transport from the hotel room to the bus terminal can be arranged upon request with Red Stag Patagonia.
The Hunting
What to expect on the field
The Corrientes Big Game program is designed to deliver authentic fair chase, free-range hunting across vast, carefully managed landscapes. Our goal is to provide challenging, ethical hunts that showcase both the quality of the trophies and the raw beauty of the Iberá.
Spot-and-stalk is the primary method, whether with a rifle or bow. Our bilingual professional guides bring decades of local experience, using glassing techniques and intimate knowledge of the terrain to locate mature, representative animals. Every outing is tailored to ensure a safe, rewarding, and unforgettable experience.
Rifles such as bolt-action .243 Win, .270 Win, .308 Win, and 6.5 Creedmoor are ideal for Axis Deer and Blackbuck, while heavier calibers like the .375 H&H are recommended for Water Buffalo. For archery hunters, compound bows in the 50–70 lb range with 300+ gr arrows and sharp broadheads are well-suited for Axis and Blackbuck.
To take advantage of the best hunting hours, outings generally begin before dawn, around 5:00 am. Guests typically return to the lodge by mid-morning for a fresh drink, lunch, and a short siesta. Afternoon hunts usually depart around 4:30 pm, concluding at dusk. Exact hunting hours may vary depending on the season, weather, and the species pursued. Guests seeking a break from hunting can enjoy Dorado fishing, the lodge’s signature activity, renowned for its excitement and breathtaking scenery of the Ibera Marsh.
Hunting Equipment
Red Stag Patagonia provides hunters with high-quality loaner hunting equipment
Hunting Gear
RIFLE SLING – It’s important that your rifle has a comfortable sling.
BINOCULARS – A good pair of light, low powered binoculars.
RANGE FINDER – Our guides all have range finders and they will measure distances for you. But bringing your personal one is always useful.
SMALL FIELD BAG or DAY PACK– To carry camera gear and other personal items into the field.
INSECT REPELLENT – Mosquitoes or other bothersome insects could be present in the field, usually on the warmest afternoons. We recommend to bring your personal choice of repellent and also a Therma-Cell device
MEDICATION –Most people have no stomach problems in this part of Argentina. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea, as when traveling anywhere, to take medication for symptomatic relief. Also, take aspirin, in addition to other medications you normally use. Band-aids – for sore fingers from shooting.
NOTE: LAUNDRY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE AT THE LODGE IF DESIRED.
GUNS
In selecting which gun you take, it boils down to personal preference.
The Ibera State Park has a general weapon season so clients can choose which kind of gun/bow they want to use. The common gun for a hunt of this kind is a typical bolt action rifle with a good scope. Good chamberings are 243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 270 Win, 308 Win, etc. For bow hunting, the same type of equipment you will use for Whitetail, will work for Axis Deer. 50 to 70 Lbs compound bows with 350+ gr arrows and good, sharp broad heads.
For Water Buffalo we use mostly 375 H&H.
Muzzleloaders and handguns are welcome too.
GUNS AVAILABLE FOR RENT
Many of our guests agree that renting guns from the lodge can be much easier than going through all the hassle involved in traveling with guns internationally. We have a good selection of rental rifles at the lodge.
Culinary Experience
At Red Stag Patagonia, our goal is to deliver a true taste of Argentina & Chile.
Food & Drink
At Red Stag Tupungato, meals are as memorable as the hunt itself. Our kitchen makes the most of fresh, locally sourced ingredients—many grown right here on the ranch, from walnuts and cherries to our own award-winning wines.
Your day starts with a hearty breakfast of homemade breads, regional jams, local honey, fresh fruit, natural yogurts, and cereals, along with eggs made to order. At midday and in the evening, gather around the table for traditional Argentine flavors. Expect premium local meats and wild game prepared over open fires—whether a classic asado or other fire-cooked specialties that capture the spirit of Mendoza’s Andean foothills.
Wines & Beverages
In the heart of Argentina’s wine country, every meal is paired with outstanding wines from the nearby Uco Valley. We also offer a selection of local beverages at the lodge. If you’d like a particular spirit or brand, we recommend bringing it along so it’s ready for you to enjoy.
