Fair Chase

Target species

Red Stag, Fallow Deer & Wild Boar

Owned by a pioneering Mendoza native, your hosts have been managing these Red Deer herds for the last 30 years. By introducing the best bloodlines from Europe and New Zealand, to the local stock, they have helped to foster some of the largest and healthiest herds in the country.

Guests will stay at the main ranch house, located adjacent to the hunting areas at the base of the foothills. For larger groups we also offer accommodations at different neighboring wineries, which have nice lodges and country hotels.

This exclusive preserve spans over 20,000 acres and sits on the mid to upper levels of a vast ranch (150,000 acres). The fertile valleys of the Mendoza Andean foothills provide great habitat for deer, giving them the nutrition they need to develop impressive racks, with some specimens naturally reaching the 400 SCI+ class.

Typically, stags of this size are only found in breeding farms in New Zealand and Europe.

Why Choose Red Stag Tupungato

World’s largest stags in the foothills of the Andes

The main ranch house offers a selection of single and double guest rooms, as well as a comfortable living room, along with an outdoor dining area and a lovely formal dining room. At the base of the ranch, below the foothills, the family operates an active farm, producing potatoes, cherries, walnuts and award winning wines. The property is set against a spectacular backdrop of some of the highest peaks in the Andes, with Mount Tupungato, one of the highest volcanoes in the world, visible from every corner of the ranch. The perfect venue for couples as well, Red Stag Tupungato offers a variety of non-hunting activities, including wine tours, trout fishing and horseback riding for interested guests and groups.

  • Capacity: The ranch lodge has capacity for 4 hunters (1×1) or 6 hunters (2×1) at the same time or 3 couples.
  • WiFi Internet access and satellite TV.
  • Our talented chefs will prepare delicious menu options including Argentina’s famed asados and fine wines, locally
sourced fruits and vegetables, and more.
  • Maid and laundry service.
  • Gun rental is available. We have a good selection of fine rifles, all equipped with high end scopes.
  • After the hunt we take care of the preparation and paperwork for the trophy export.
  • There are several non-hunting activities like horseback riding, hiking, sightseeing tours, birdwatching, trout fishing,
etc. Some of the best wineries in the country are in the area, so half or full day wine tours can be arranged.

What time of the year should I come?

We’re often asked: ”When is the best time to hunt red stag in Mendoza?” The answer is closely tied to the natural rhythm of the deer—and the peak of the season is during the rut, which typically runs from early March through mid-April. This is when stags are most vocal and active, making it the most thrilling time to be in the field. However, the hunting season at Red Stag Tupungato extends from March 1st through June 15th, offering excellent opportunities throughout.

During March and early April, the roar begins in earnest. Dominant stags emerge from the cover of the Andes foothills, chasing rivals and collecting hinds, their guttural calls echoing through the valleys. For many hunters, this is the ultimate red stag experience—stalking heavy-antlered giants through wild country as the sound of the roar leads the way.

As the season progresses into late April and May, temperatures cool and the rut begins to taper off. The hunting remains exceptional, particularly for those seeking solitude, cooler weather, and the chance to chase calm, post-rut stags feeding in open areas. June rounds out the season with quiet stalks and clear skies, and it’s also a great time to target big wild boar, which are more commonly encountered later in the year.

At Red Stag Tupungato, we place a premium on pre-scouting and planning. With 150,000 acres of vast, rugged terrain, knowing where the mature stags are moving is key. That’s why we encourage guests interested in a specific trophy class to plan ahead and let us know in advance—we can assign a dedicated guide team to locate your target animal before you even arrive.

Whether you come for the intensity of the rut or the serenity of the late season, Mendoza’s towering peaks, crisp mountain air, and world-class Red stags await.

To get to the lodge you need to fly into Buenos Aires (Ezeiza Intl. Airport – EZE), which is served with
daily direct flights from many U.S. or European cities. Once there, you’ll transfer to the domestic airport Aeroparque Jorge Newbery – AEP (40’ to 1 hr drive), and take a 1:45 min flight to Mendoza Airport (MDZ). Another option is to fly via Santiago de Chile (45 min flight).

Hunters will then be picked up at the airport by the lodge staff, and transferred to the ranch, along roads
with stunning views of the Andes Mountains to the west. The drive takes 1 hour approx.

Location

The ranch is located in the Tupungato region of Mendoza province on Western Argentina, only 85 Kilometers (50 miles) south of the Mendoza city airport. It’s one of the biggest and oldest working ranches in this part of the country. Its 150.000 acres property that goes from the Uco Valley all the way to the highest peaks of the Andes right in the border with Chile. The ranch has amazing views of the Uco Valley where some of the best wineries in all of Argentina are located, also some of the highest peaks in the South American continent are within the ranch’s boundaries, with a couple over 20.000 ft. The views are stunning!

The Hunting

What to expect on the field

The Red Stag Tupungato hunting program is focused on providing the best fair chase opportunities on some of the most impressive red stags in South America.

Most mornings will find you up well before dawn. After a hot breakfast, you and your guide will depart by 4 wheel drive truck, or side by side for the hunting area, located up in the foothills of the high mountains. Horses may also be used, depending upon the locations the guide has scouted the big stags in, along with your preferences.

Drives to the hunting area range from 15 to 40 minutes, depending on where the game has been scouted. Spotting and stalking is the most common method of hunting for rifle hunters. Archery hunters may also spend some time sitting over wallows and watering areas, awaiting the stag to come in. The hunting can be arranged to include hikes into high country looking for lonely big stags or sitting in a blind overlooking a wallow in the valleys or river bottoms.

In addition to the finest red stag hunting in South America, the ranch has a growing population of fallow deer and every season some beautiful bucks are harvested. Pure wild European boar thrive as well in this area-a great addition to the deer.

Morning will begin with a wake up call, approximately an hour before departure time. Breakfast will be served shortly. Hunters will depart the lodge well before sunrise. Drives vary depending on conditions, but range from fifteen to forty five minutes.

You may return to the lodge for lunch, and some time to relax, or enjoy a siesta or lunch right in the field.

Hunters will again depart for their afternoon hunt around 3pm.

Evening hunts last until nearly dark, allowing enough light to safely get down from the mountains, after
which you will return to the lodge, where you will be met with cocktails and appetizers as well a delicious
dinner, before retiring for the evening.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE TROPHIES AFTER THE HUNT?
Right after the harvest, guides will ask hunters how they would like the trophy (for shoulder mount, Euro, etc.), and they will field dress it accordingly.

At the ranch, we prepare the trophies according to clients’ requests. The hides get salted and dried, and the skulls cleaned, bleached, and cut. The entire process is supervised by one of the best taxidermists in the country.

When the season ends, trophies are sent to our taxidermist’s shop, where a final inspection is carried out to ensure they are suitable and meet all export requirements. At the same time, our export company completes the process and applies for the necessary export permits.

Once trophies are ready and the export documents issued, the exporter arranges the shipping to the final destination. An important detail is that we can only ship to a customs broker at the destination country to obtain clearance. Clients can provide their broker’s information, or our exporter has a list of brokers they work with. Once the trophies clear into the destination country, they can be shipped to your chosen taxidermist or any desired final destination.

Mounting trophies in Argentina is a great option. We can get quotations from our taxidermists. The shipping cost of mounts is slightly higher than shipping only antlers and salted hides, but taxidermy work in Argentina is generally cheaper and faster than in the United States, often making it the more convenient option.

We have also partnered with Jonas Brothers Studio of New York, owned by Carl Pepi, maybe one of the most talented taxidermists in the world. We get a special rate and service for our customers.

The delivery time varies since there are four, and sometimes five, different government agencies involved in the process of issuing the export permits (Province and Federal Fish & Wildlife department, National Animal Sanity department, Customs, and CITES office in Argentina). While some are faster than others, they like to take their time. We are usually able to ship trophies within 12 months after the hunt.

Taxidermy work and export costs are quoted on a case-by-case basis.

Hunting Equipment

Red Stag Patagonia provides hunters with high-quality loaner hunting equipment

Hunting Gear

RIFLE SLING – It’s important that your rifle has a comfortable sling.

BINOCULARS – A good pair of 8 or 10 X or binoculars is a must.

RANGE FINDER – Our guides all have range finders and they will measure distances for you. But bringing your personal one is always useful.

BOOTS – This might be the most important item for ensuring a smooth hunt. Bring a good pair of well-broken-in hunting or hiking boots that provide good ankle support.

SHOOTING STICKS – Bring your personal favourite (bipods, tripods), whichever you like best and feel more confident shooting from. The guides will have in case you don’t bring one.

WARM HAT – Something with ear flaps or a ski-style hat that will cover ears is the best bet for colder days.

SMALL FIELD BAG or DAY PACK– To carry camera gear and other personal items into the field.

INSECT REPELLENT – Mosquitoes or other bothersome insects are very unusual in the field. You can bring your personal preference of insect repellent just in case.

MEDICATION
Most people have no stomach problems in this part of Argentina. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea, as when traveling anywhere, to take along medication for symptomatic relief. Also, take aspirin, in addition to other medications you normally use. Band-aids – for sore fingers from shooting.

NOTE: LAUNDRY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE AT THE LODGE IF DESIRED.

GUNS
In selecting which gun to use, it boils down to personal preference.

Mendoza & Neuquen provinces have a general weapon season so clients can choose which kind of gun/bow they want to use. The most common gun for such a hunt is a typical bolt action rifle with a good scope. Good chamberings are 270 Win, 30-06, 7 mm Rem Mag, 7 PRC, 300 Win Mag, etc. For Bow hunting, the same type of equipment you will use for Elk, will work for Red Stag. 60 to 70 Lbs compound bows with 400+ gr arrows and good, sharp broadheads.

For Wild Boar, the same guns that we use for Stag are fine.

Muzzleloaders, handguns and open sight guns are welcome too.

GUNS AVAILABLE FOR RENT
Many of our guests agree that renting guns from the lodge can be much easier than applying for gun entry permits and traveling with them internationally.

It’s easy to rent a gun from the lodge. We have a good selection of accurate rifles that are appropriate for these type of hunts. All our rifles sport high quality scopes. The lodge manager or your guide will note the specific rental rifle you want to use. That gun will be yours for the duration of your stay. However, you are welcome to change guns and try something different. There are no add-on fees to switch. We want you to shoot a gun you’re comfortable and effective with!

Culinary Experience

At Red Stag Patagonia, our goal is to deliver a true taste of Argentina & Chile.

Food & Drink
At Red Stag Tupungato, meals are as memorable as the hunt itself. Our kitchen makes the most of fresh, locally sourced ingredients—many grown right here on the ranch, from walnuts and cherries to our own award-winning wines.

Your day starts with a hearty breakfast of homemade breads, regional jams, local honey, fresh fruit, natural yogurts, and cereals, along with eggs made to order. At midday and in the evening, gather around the table for traditional Argentine flavors. Expect premium local meats and wild game prepared over open fires—whether a classic asado or other fire-cooked specialties that capture the spirit of Mendoza’s Andean foothills.

Wines & Beverages

In the heart of Argentina’s wine country, every meal is paired with outstanding wines from the nearby Uco Valley. We also offer a selection of local beverages at the lodge. If you’d like a particular spirit or brand, we recommend bringing it along so it’s ready for you to enjoy.
